Motoman Robots for Sealing, Dosing, Dispensing and Glueing / Bonding and Cladding

Motoman Robots are commonly used for consistent application of fluid and adhesive material, due to their ability to follow an accurate path with a precisely controlled speed. Applications are sealing, dosing, dispensing, glueing and application of insulation material. Robots work with material pumps, regulators, and dispensing guns to apply a material such as sealant, adhesive, or washing solution to a stationary or moving part. 

In most of those dispensing applications, the robot does not manipulate the dosing tool directly - the robot is handling the part under a dispensing tool, and the dispensing unit is stationary. This is much better for the process stability of the media supply.

Sealing (with Motoman GP Series Robots)

MOTOMAN Robots provide a superb motion control technology for these kind of path-related applications - excellent path continuity and speed control. The fast interpolation rate of the YRC1000 Controller allows very fast and sensitive motion control, resulting into very constant speed proportional to the dosing rate, which is required to to achieve perfect thickness and height of the seal. The Yaskawa Controller provides standard and generic interfaces to major brands of dispensing equipment including dispensing guns, material pumps, and fluid regulator controllers. 

This excellent motion capability is important for robotic sealing applications - bead application, flat extrusion, swirl application, sound dampener application, cleaning and activating glueing area, 2K application. Typical sealing applications include automotive car bodies, powertrain and engine parts (pumps, cylinder head), windows, electric switchboards and, PCB boards and many more.

 

Interior Sealing Applications in Car Body and Paint Shops usually require large reach robots, like the GP20HL.

Dispensing (with Motoman GP Series Robots)

Dispensing robots have the ability to control all aspects of application parameters, including air assist, atomization air, multiple fluid flows/guns/equipment, speed-proportional control, and anticipation parameters. 

For smaller workpieces, robots usually are moving the dispensing tools. Larger parts are typically handled by the robot under a dispensing tool, in order to reduce floor space and to reduce the fluid transportation lines short.

Glueing / Bonding Adhesives (with Motoman GP Series Robots)

A robotic adhesive application process can be dynamic (applying adhesive beads), falling under the dispensing category - cleaning and activating gueing area, 1K/2K application.

 

Simpler robotic Glueing Stations are static - picking up the glue from an adhesive dispenser and just pressing parts together. Easy job for a Motoman Robot !

Cladding and Decoration (with Motoman GP Series Robots)

Cladding is building 3-dimensional layer of adhesive material for decoration. This application could also be classified as an Additive Manufacturing Process.

Food Decoration with Motoman Robots

Motoman Material Handling Robots or HC10 Collaborative robots with FGG (Food grade grease) options are fine for food decoration. Collaborative HC10 Series robots are perfect for individial decoration jobs in small batch sizes, because hand guiding is absolutely easy to program, and the robot can be installed in existing workspaces without re-arrangements of the existing environment.

How to program Robotic Dispensing Applications

The YASKAWA Motoman Software packages includes many sophisticated software features to achieve exact path switching timing, and dosing pump drive control.

Many Dispensing/Sealing robots are programmed offline, using the MotoSim Offline Simulation Software, or 3rd party tools, some of them deriving path information from a CAD model through paint-specific CAD/CAM software.

Direct Teaching / Handguiding (with collaborative HC10/HC20 Series Robots) is another interesting programming method. The HC10 direct teach function collaborative robots allows quick and easy programming for small batch sizes and permanent program adaptions. Due to its high level YRC1000 control technology and its stability, the HC10 differentiates himself significantly from most of the other cobot models on the market which have been designed originally for simple point-to-point motions - HC Series robots providing excellence path performance, ideal for dispensing applications.

Extending the Robot's Workspace (with TSL Tracks)

For very large parts, or motion between the glueing station and other stations, the robot might need to be moved via additional tracks, e.g. the TSL tracks from our accessory portfolio. Yaskawa Tracks are controlled as a fully synchronized and integrated 7th axis, this means that the TCP motion controlled involving all robotic and external axis. With a 24 m axis, you can produce a perfect 24m long 3D seal - without any negative synchronisation side effects from the track repositioning.

The Robot and track movement can be perfectly synchronized with a moving conveyor belt, using the Motoman Conveyor Tracking Function. Motoman robots with TSL Series tracks are a perfectly synchronized team to achieve perfect seams even when everything is on the move.
